Nusa Penida has a short list of named snorkel spots, and the tour listings pick from it in different ways. This guide sets the spots side by side so you can read a stop list and know what you are buying.

Begin with this
Indonesia.Travel, the ministry of tourism's site, lists three snorkeling spots for Nusa Penida: Crystal Bay in Nusa Penida Bay, about 15 km from Nusa Penida Harbour, Manta Point on the southern side of the island, and Malibu Point on the eastern side.1,4,2 The same three names appear on its list of diving spots.5 That is the official shortlist: one bay on the west side, one site in the south and one point in the east.
The Bali provincial government's destination pages add Gamat Bay, which they say is harder to reach than Crystal Bay and is one of the best snorkeling spots on the island together with it.6,7 Indonesia.Travel's Nusa islands guide describes Gamat Bay on the south-western edge of the island as a spot where you can see various exotic fish and coral reefs.8
The tour listings carry two more names that the tourism pages do not: Manta Bay, which research sites place about 12 km from Manta Point, and The Wall, which our session lists as a 40-minute stop and the Manta Point listing offers as an optional 20-minute snorkel.3 A name on a booking page is not a map reference, so the next sections give each one a line of context, and the map on this page puts them in the right order along the coast.
Six spots side by side
| Spot | Position | Official word | Named in listings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crystal Bay | Nusa Penida Bay, about 15 km from the harbour.1 | One of the best snorkeling spots; gear rents on the beach.7,13 | 5 of the 7 |
| Gamat Bay | South-western edge of the island.8 | Remote, with a strong current; fins advised.9,10 | 6 of the 7 |
| Manta Bay | About 12 km from Manta Point.3 | A feeding ground for males and juveniles.3 | 5 of the 7 |
| Manta Point (south) | Southern side of the island.4 | A cleaning and courtship station for adults.3 | 4 of the 7 |
| Malibu Point | Eastern side of the island.2 | Listed by Indonesia.Travel as a snorkeling spot.2 | 0 of the 7 |
| The Wall | Not placed by the tourism sources. | An optional 20-minute snorkel on one listing and a 40-minute stop on another. | 3 of the 7 |
Locations come from Indonesia.Travel and the Bali provincial destination pages; listing counts come from the seven GetYourGuide listings we compared.1
Gamat Bay is remote. The Bali page says you probably will not see anyone there except snorkeling or diving boats in the morning, and that the current can be very strong, so fins are advised.9,10 You can bring your own gear or rent it on the road before parking.11
Crystal Bay is the easy one. The beach is easily reached by scooter from Toyapakeh Harbor by the new road, and snorkeling equipment can be rented on the sand.12,13 Manta Bay opens our session, a shallow site that research describes as a feeding ground, mostly for males and juveniles.3
Our island session's description strings the three together, with about 2 hours of snorkeling overall, while its itinerary lists Manta Bay, Gamat Bay and The Wall at 40 minutes each, with Crystal Bay as an optional alternative to The Wall. A fast-boat version from Sanur gives each of the three bays 40 minutes. A private boat gives each of its four stops 30 minutes, adding The Wall to the three bays.
Who names which spot
Counted by text search of the titles, descriptions, highlights and itineraries of seven GetYourGuide listings for Nusa Penida snorkeling; a name anywhere in them counts once per listing.
Manta Point is a separate site on the southern side of the island.4 Research describes it as a cleaning and courtship station used mainly by adults, with courtship matching the annual peak in sightings in May.3 Manta Bay and Manta Point are among the 11 main dive spots in these waters and the two used most by tourism operators.14
Three listings in our file are built around it. One gives Manta Point and Gamat Bay 1.5 hours apiece plus an optional The Wall snorkel, for about 3 hours of snorkeling in all. One departs from Lembongan and gives Manta Point 45 minutes. One boat listing says the snorkeling boat leaves at 9:45 AM and that the run to Manta Point may pass through open sea with waves.
The dedicated manta page on this site compares Manta Bay and Manta Point in full. For choosing spots the rule is simpler: the Manta Point listing shares Gamat Bay and The Wall with our island session, but not Manta Bay or Crystal Bay. Whatever the Nusa Penida snorkeling tour you pick, the water sets the final plan.

Adds The Wall
Malibu Point is the eastern name in the tourism ministry's lists, and none of the seven listings we compared names it.2 If it appeals, ask an operator whether anyone runs it and whether the sea allows it on your date.
The Wall appears three times in the listings: as an optional 20-minute snorkel on the Manta Point listing, as a 30-minute stop on the private boat and as a 40-minute stop on our island session. Mangrove Point, on the Lembongan listing, gets 30 minutes after Manta Point and Gamat Bay. Secret Bay turns up as an option on a fast-boat listing, alongside Manta Bay and Manta Point.
Several listings keep the choice open and name sites that depend on sea and weather conditions. The honest way to compare tours is to check which sites the listing promises and which it merely names as possible.

Counting across seven listings, Gamat Bay is named in 6, Manta Bay in 5, Crystal Bay in 5, Manta Point in 4, The Wall in 3, Mangrove Point in 2 and Secret Bay in 1. Gamat Bay is the most common name, and Malibu Point appears in none.
Durations differ more than names. The longest single blocks any of the seven listings gives are 1.5 hours each, at Manta Point and Gamat Bay on two of them. Our island session gives about 2 hours of snorkeling in all, the Manta Point listing about 3 hours, and the private boat 30 minutes at each of four stops. The fast boat from Sanur adds a 45-minute speedboat crossing and has the boat leave Bali at 7:30 or 8:00 AM.
The price of a trip differs with the setup. The island session starts from $17, the Manta Point listing from $26, the Lembongan listing from $21, the Sanur crossing from $42 and the private boat from $64. Those are from prices, so check the date you want.

there is a diving spot known as Gamat Bay where you can witness various exotic fishes and coral reefs
Kit and questions
The Coral Triangle Center records 296 coral species in the protected area in 2008 and describes fringing reefs as widespread.15 Green and hawksbill turtles also nest there.16 Reef mantas are present year-round, and the Marine Megafauna Foundation counts 624 individuals identified in a six-year study.17,18
In the ten newest English reviews of our session, six mention manta rays and the same six mention turtles, and all ten give five stars. That is a small sample, and the listing itself says manta rays are met about 30% of the time on average. Treat the reviews as a sign that sightings do happen, not as a forecast for your morning.
Plastic is a real hazard here: manta rays and sunfish are especially vulnerable to it, so carry back everything you bring.19 Nothing about the reef changes the rule that it is the animals' home first. Do not touch or feed animals, do not step on or touch coral, do not disturb sediment and do not litter, says the Coral Triangle Center.20
The research that counted the mantas notes that in the north-west monsoon, from December to January, unfavorable weather limited access to the study sites and regularly cut survey time.21 That is a research note, not a tour rule, but it shows the sea can limit access to the manta sites.
The listings put the same point in tour language. Ours says that if Manta Bay cannot be entered because of weather or sea conditions, a safe alternative site is visited. The Manta Point listing says the same about Manta Point. A Lembongan listing says spots are adjusted on the spot if the weather is not great.
So the practical choice is between flexibility and a named spot. A session with three stops survives a bad day at one of them. A session built around one named site leans harder on the sea. Choose free cancellation, which our listing and the others offer up to 24 hours before.
