Crystal Bay is the west-coast beach that Bali's own tourism pages rank among the top five places to see on the island. This guide covers the swim, the sunset, the sunfish months and the bay's place in a three-stop session.

Crystal Bay sits in Nusa Penida Bay, about 15 km from Nusa Penida Harbour, according to the national tourism ministry's snorkeling page.1 The Bali provincial government's own destination page says the beach is easily reached by scooter from Toyapakeh Harbor by the new road.2 Nusa Penida Crystal Bay is a beach you can ride to yourself, without a boat, if you rent a scooter and take it slowly.
The same Bali page calls Crystal Bay a famous place for scuba diving or snorkeling and puts it among the top 5 places to see on Nusa Penida.6 Gamat Bay, the next snorkeling site over on the island's west side, is close by, which suits a boat that links several stops.
Of the three Nusa islands, Nusa Penida is the largest,7 and the bays on this page sit in the Marine Protected Area that the island's waters were declared in 2014.8 In 2017 a conservation group dived Manta Bay and Crystal Bay in one outing and saw manta rays, banded sea kraits, schooling fish, nudibranchs and healthy corals, though not the mola they hoped for.9
Three bays on one coast
| Point of comparison | Crystal Bay | Gamat Bay | Manta Bay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reaching it by land | Scooter from Toyapakeh Harbor by the new road.2 | A road ends at the hilltop, then a fairly easy path leads down.14 | Visited by boat in the session listings. |
| Who is there | Ranked among the top 5 sights on the island.6 | Remote, with mostly snorkel and dive boats in the morning.15 | A busy manta feeding ground.16 |
| Gear | Rent it on the beach.4 | Bring your own or rent it on the road.17 | Check your listing; the sessions list the stops, not the kit. |
| Water | Mola mola in summer, per the Bali page.5 | A strong current, so fins are advised.18 | 7 to 25 m deep, with a feeding ground for young mantas.19 |

Beach and gear details come from the Bali provincial destination pages; the depth range and counts come from the study and the seven listings compared.3
The Bali province page says Crystal Bay, together with Gamat Bay, is one of the best snorkeling spots on Nusa Penida, and that you can rent all the snorkeling equipment on the beach.3,4 The reef is part of an area where 296 coral species were recorded in 2008, with fringing reefs widespread.12 That is a count for the whole protected area, not for this one bay.
The same page adds that, if you are very lucky, you might see dolphins here.13 Treat that as a bonus line rather than a plan. What the listings promise is more modest: the itinerary of the session we sell lists Manta Bay, Gamat Bay and The Wall, and offers Crystal Bay as an optional alternative to The Wall at 40 minutes, with about 2 hours of snorkeling in total. A fast-boat listing from Sanur gives each of its three bays 40 minutes. A private-boat listing gives 30 minutes at Crystal Bay. That is the picture to hold in mind when snorkeling at Crystal Bay in Nusa Penida.
Reading the ten newest English reviews of our session, six mention manta rays and turtles, all ten give five stars, and none names Crystal Bay or Gamat Bay. The reviewers name the animals they met rather than the bays. If a specific bay matters to you, say so to the guide before you leave the beach.
How long the window is
The mola mola, or ocean sunfish, is the reason many divers talk about Crystal Bay. The Bali province page calls the bay one of the most popular diving spots on the island in summer, because there is a good chance of seeing the famous mola mola, which it puts at more than 3 m across and heavier than a ton.5,21
The research puts dates on that. The Coral Triangle Center says nutrient-rich upwelling is strongest from July to October, when plankton draws mola-mola to cleaning stations.10 A study of sea temperature and sunfish found that upwelling of colder water south of Bali peaks in August to September, and that this coincides with high numbers of sunfish at Crystal Bay from August to October.11 Read the window as a few months, not a calendar date.
If a sunfish does appear, the code is firm: keep 5 m away, do not swim under the fish and do not block its route.22 None of the seven snorkel listings we compared mentions a sunfish, and the Bali page frames the mola mola as a reason to dive, so go in expecting a reef swim and treat a sunfish as luck.
Choose your Crystal Bay
The same beach serves a sunset walker, a snorkeler and a sunfish hunter very differently.
If I want to swim on my own time
Ride out and rent gear
The beach rents snorkeling equipment, and the road from Toyapakeh is described as easy by scooter.4,2
If I want a guided swim with a film
Book the island session
It lists three stops with about 2 hours of snorkeling and a GoPro link by email within 8 to 12 hours.
If I want to see a sunfish
Plan an August to October dive
A study links high sunfish numbers at Crystal Bay to those months.11
If I want a quiet water morning
Look at Gamat Bay too
It is much more remote, with mostly snorkel and dive boats in the morning.15
If Sunset is what I came for
Go in the evening, separately
The Bali page praises the sunset in front of the beach.20
Three ways to swim here

Meets on the island

Crossing from Sanur
40 minutes a bay

Just your own group on deck
30 minutes a bay
Our island session's itinerary lists Manta Bay, Gamat Bay and The Wall at 40 minutes each, with about 2 hours of snorkeling overall, and offers Crystal Bay as an optional alternative to The Wall. If Manta Bay cannot be entered because of weather or sea conditions, the listing says a safe alternative site is visited, so the order and the sites can change on the day.
Across seven listings we compared, Crystal Bay is named in five, level with Manta Bay and ahead of Manta Point at four, while Gamat Bay is named in six. The guest requirements are the same wherever you book: the listing says guests must be confident swimmers and comfortable in open ocean conditions.
Transfers and tours vary by option. The island session can be booked as a shared snorkel that meets on Nusa Penida at about 2 hours, with a hotel transfer on the island at about 3 hours, or as snorkeling plus a west land tour of about 8 to 9 hours. The fast-boat version from Sanur adds the crossing, with the boat leaving Bali at 7:30 or 8:00 AM.
The cold-water calendar
July through October
The Coral Triangle Center says upwelling is strongest in these months, and plankton draws mola-mola to cleaning stations.10
August into September
A sea-temperature study puts the peak of colder, chlorophyll-rich upwelling south of Bali in these two months.11
August through October
The same study links high sunfish occurrences at Crystal Bay to these months.11
Summer
The Bali page calls Crystal Bay one of the most popular diving spots in summer because of the chance of the mola mola.5
The Crystal Bay sunset on Nusa Penida earns praise from the Bali page, which says the sunset in front of the beach is one of the most spectacular in Nusa Penida.20 That is the opinion of a tourism office, not a measurement.
The evening at Crystal Bay is a separate plan from the snorkel session, which runs about 2 hours, or 8 to 9 hours with the west land tour. Reaching the beach by scooter from Toyapakeh Harbor along the new road is the route the Bali page names.2 Roads on Nusa Penida are narrow and bumpy, per the listing for our session, so ride slowly, and allow time to leave before dark.
If you prefer not to ride, the island session has a version with a hotel transfer on Nusa Penida, and the listing includes a GoPro link emailed 8 to 12 hours after the activity, which is handy if you want underwater footage of the bay itself.

Beach bag and reef manners
The Coral Triangle Center's advice for snorkelers around Nusa Penida is plain: do not touch or feed animals, do not step on or touch coral, do not disturb sediment and do not litter.25 The center also says reefs in the protected area suffer from careless snorkeling and diving and from unsustainable fishing methods.26
Plastic is part of the picture too. The center says manta rays and sunfish are especially vulnerable to plastic,27 which is a good reason to bring a refillable bottle and take every wrapper back to the boat.
Keep your kicks short and your fins off the bottom, and enter the water from sand, not from coral. A guide who steers a group of beginners clear of the reef is doing the protected area a favor. Ask before you go in how the group will be kept off the coral, and what happens if a beginner struggles with the swell or the current. The strongest current named for this stretch is at Gamat Bay, where fins are advised.18
Ask which three stops your date will use. The itinerary of our session lists Manta Bay, Gamat Bay and The Wall, with Crystal Bay only as an optional alternative, and the listing also says an alternative site is used when Manta Bay cannot be entered. Ask whether Crystal Bay will be offered on your day and how the order is decided, because the stops change with the sea, not with the brochure.
Ask about the group and the guide. Our listing allows a private group and names live guides in English, French and Indonesian. A private-boat listing names a live guide in English. To swim with a small party, say so at booking, not at the beach.
Ask what the price covers. Our listing starts from $17 for the shared version, and the private-boat listing from $64. Both can be cancelled without a fee up to 24 hours ahead of the start, a useful term on Nusa Penida, where the sea decides whether a site can be used.
